How to Awaken Mangekyou Sharingan
If someone had the willingness to kill their loved ones, like a best friend (person closest to them), they would activate their Sharingan, either by a very emotional/stressful moment. However, this isn’t the only way of activating Sharingan. If a good Sharingan user experiences the loss of someone close or any kind of severe loss then it might activate the Mangekyou Sharingan. For example, Itachi awakens his MS after seeing Shisui die sacrificing his life for the village. Sasuke awakens his MS after finding out the truth about Itachi. This is also very subjective as everyone doesn’t get MS but only a few selected characters get it.
This will cause their Sharingan to evolve into Mangekyou. The Mangekyou Sharingan is a double helix pattern instead of an abnormal pattern like in the case of ordinary Sharingan users. This Mangekyou ability only activates once a user goes through emotional trauma and loses someone close to them or vice versa with gaining someone close to them then having them killed, as seen by Kakashi, Sasuke, and his brother Itachi.

Signs of Activated Mangekyou Sharingan Eyes
When activated, the user’s Mangekyou Sharingan will bleed; because their eyes are undergoing drastic changes. The veins around the eye sockets and temples bulge out and even pulsate.
The tomoe’s in the user’s eye get replaced by a unique design that is different for every individual. Once the MS is activated the user will not have any tomoe visible but the three tomoe present in the user’s eye will convert themselves into a unique design. How to Unlock Mangekyou Sharingan
Unlocking Mangekyou Sharingan is the same as awakening it.
The Mangekyou Sharingan is activated when one’s friend/relative dies by their hands or by any other means and they feel truly sad for this loss. This is because the mangekyou Sharingan needs a great loss to be awakened.
If this happens, then one should go into the basics of mangekyou Sharingan training.

Itachi Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan
Itachi awakens his MS after seeing Shisui kill himself to save the village.
Itachi’s abilities are Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and Susanoo. Itachi’s MS is one of the most powerful in the entire series.
Itachi due to his illness couldn’t maintain and use his MS for long periods. Moreover, Itachi’s illness got worse due to his overuse of MS, and Itachi’s was also near blindness when he was fighting Sasuke.
Kakashi Hatake Mangekyou sharingan
Kakashi is a famous and liked character. Kakashi gets one of Obito’s Sharingan after Obito gifts it to him when he was about to die.
Kakashi first awakens the Mangekyou Sharingan after accidentally killing Rin and being traumatized by the event. Obito and Kakashi’s Sharingan both awaken the MS at the same time when Rin gets stabbed as both the Sharingan are connected and in sync with each other.
However, Kakashi is not fully able to use and control his MS until Naruto Shippuden. Kakashi being a non-Uchiha, took him a long time to get used to the Sharingan. Moreover, using the MS takes a heavy toll on Kakashi’s body and if Kakashi overuses his MS then at times he gets bedridden for an entire week.
Kakashi’s MS gives him the ability to use Kamui on any person or object as per his wishes. Using Kamui sends that particular object or person to the Kamui dimension.
Near the end of the series, Kakashi gets to use the Double Mangekyou Sharingan and the perfect Susanoo for a temporary period gifted to him by Obito.
Sasuke Uchiha Mangekyou Sharingan
Sasuke has a very special type of MS eye which he was able to awaken after finding out the truth about Itachi’s life and his sacrifice.
Sasuke gets the ability to use an imperfect Susanoo, Genjutsu, and Inferno-style Flame control. Sasuke after awakening his MS overuses them against Killer Bee and the Five Kage which leads to him going blind very early. Sasuke then with the help of Obito takes Itachi’s eye and awakens the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan.

Obito Uchiha Mangekyou sharingan
Obito Uchiha awakens his MS after seeing Rin getting killed in the hands of Kakashi. This happens at the same time when Kakashi also awakens his MS as both eyes are connected.
Obito also gets to use the Kamui but it is a little different than Kakashi’s. Kakashi was able to cast the Kamui at a certain distance and pull anyone apart from himself into the Kamui dimension. Whereas, Obito can only pull himself and anyone standing right next to him into the Kamui dimension. His Kamui doesn’t have the range to pull objects into the dimension.
Both Obito or Kakashi don’t get to use the Susanoo as you need both the MS eyes to use the Susanoo.
Obito being an Uchiha can use Kamui very fluently. To counter the blindness Obito uses the Hashirama cells in his body so that he can spam Kamui as many times as he wants without losing his sight.
Obito also has access to Genjutsu which helped him trap a perfect Jinchuriki Yagura the Fourth Mizukage under his control. Obito also used his MS to control the Nine-Tails when he attacked the Leaf.
Shisui Uchiha Mangekyou Sharingan
Shisui Uchiha awakened his MS when he saw his closest friend sacrifice to save his life during the war.
We don’t see Shisui’s Susanoo in the anime or the manga. But the games Naruto ultimate ninja storm series which are canon show that Shisui does have a Susanoo which is green in color.
Apart from that Shisui has access to one of the strongest genjutsu of the series “Kotoamatsukami”. Which is known to be so strong and efficient that Shisui can control and manipulate a person according to his will and make that person do whatever he wants. No one is known to have countered this Genjutsu, not even perfect Jinchuriki.
Danzo Shimura Mangekyou Sharingan
Danzo Shimura was one of the elders of the Leaf and the founder of the Root Anbu. He was a ninja who worked in the shadows to bring peace to Konoha (Hidden Leaf Village) in his dark ways.
Danzo stole one of Shisui’s eyes for his unique genjutsu and used it at the Five Kage Summit to become the commander of the allied shinobi forces.
Madara’s Mangekyou Sharingan
Madara awakened his MS after witnessing the death of a lot of his family and clan members as it was wartime and people were dying all over the place.
Madara’s abilities are not shown in the anime. But we do know that he had access to Susanoo and genjutsu.
Later on, Izuna Uchiha sacrifices his eyes so that Madara can awaken the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. After awakening EMS, Madara gets access to perfect Susanoo and genjutsu which he uses to control the Nine tails.
Izuna Uchiha MS
Izuna Uchiha is Madara’s younger brother who awakens his MS during the war after witnessing the death of his family members.
His MS isn’t shown much and we don’t know his abilities, but having both eyes makes it certain that he did have a Susanoo but we never saw it.
During the war, Izuna gets defeated by Tobirama Senju and before dying, Izuna gives his eyes to Madara so that he can awaken EMS.
Fugaku Uchiha MS
Fugaku Uchiha is known to have awakened his MS during the war when he witnessed his friend’s death. However, we never see Fugaku’s MS in the manga but only in the anime.
Fugaku’s MS abilities are unknown but he was known as a good candidate for the title of the fourth Hokage and on the same level as Minato.
What Does the Mangekyou Sharingan Do
There are many Mangekyou Sharingan Abilities. Every MS user gets a different ability. For Itachi’s MS it’s Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, Sasuke’s Inferno Style, Obito’s Kamui, Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami, etc. one thing that is common for all MS users is the Susanoo.
The Mangekyou Sharingan is an advanced form of the Sharingan that gives one the ability to use unique techniques. The Mangekyou Sharingan is awakened by witnessing the immense loss of losing someone close.
They gain the ability to trap individuals in illusions, as seen through Itachi’s usage of Tsukuyomi on Sasuke, Sasuke on Danzo and Madara on Kurama
When used against others, the illusion puts them in a big space, with their comrades standing around them. They also gain the ability to read and control minds, such as when Itachi forced Kabuto to use the Reanimation Jutsu on his clan, and how Madara controlled the Nine-Tails
Through training, the Uchiha can gain even greater use of this eye ability. Without any emotion, Itachi was able to break free from Kabuto’s control and cast a genjutsu on him that made him go through various emotions for what seemed to be several days. Madara also stated that his full power wasn’t going all out when fighting with Sasuke.

Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan
Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan is a mangekyou Sharingan eye that does not cause any blindness no matter how many times a user uses the EMS abilities. One can awaken EMS by taking the MS of his/her sibling. Both the users need to have MS and one of them has to sacrifice their MS. It only works in the same bloodline so any Uchiha cannot steal anyone’s MS to get EMS.
There are EMS abilities that MS doesn’t possess. EMS has all Mangekyou Sharingan abilities and it allows the user to use all MS abilities with better chakra control and less usage of chakra.
How to Get Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan
The only way to get an Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan is just by taking a Mangekyou from someone else from your own family. Preferably your sibling.
Another way is to steal one of the eyes of an EMS user. Although, will a non-Uchiha member be able to control and withstand the EMS is not clear as we know that it took an immense strain on Kakashi to use the MS.
EMS is at its maximum potential as compared to base Sharingan.
It can also be considered an Ultimate Sharingan.
