When Does Naruto Become a Chunin? Does Naruto ever hold the rank of chūnin? How did Naruto become a Jonin?

If you are finding answers to these questions then you’ve just come to the right place.

Naruto’s Journey from Genin to Hokage

Naruto’s journey from a mischievous youngster to the Hokage of Konoha is an inspiring tale. Despite his numerous achievements and battles won, Naruto never officially held a rank higher than Genin in the series.

As you know, it is fun to watch a figure like him inspire us from the very beginning of the anime. You didn’t get a chance to see Naruto acquiring greater ranks than merely Genin.

He got the Genin rank when he created multiple Shadow clones (almost 1000) at the beginning of Naruto.

Does Naruto Become a Jonin or Chunin?

The Answer is quite weird. Why is that? Naruto never becomes a Chunin or Jonin in the Naruto or Naruto Shippuden series. Let us look into it in a sequence:

    Naruto’s Rank Progression

Naruto earned his Genin rank at the beginning of the series when he mastered the Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu, a feat that surprised many.

Does Naruto Become a Jōnin or Chūnin?

Interestingly, Naruto never officially becomes a Chūnin or Jōnin in the Naruto or Naruto Shippuden series. Let’s delve into this:

    Naruto’s Potential

During the Chūnin Exams, Naruto defeated Neji, who was already at the Chūnin level. He had also mastered the summoning of Gamabunta, defeated Gaara using Gamabunta, mastered the Rasengan, and had a fierce battle with Sasuke using the One Tail mode.

By the end of the series’ part one, Naruto was at least at the Chūnin level in terms of skills and abilities, but he didn’t officially become a Chūnin.

One thing we know for sure is, that his level was already above Chunin, but other factors stopped him from being promoted: the inability to take chunin exams and the shinobi world war, etc.

In the Naruto movie “Road to Ninja”, it was shown that to become a Jōnin, one must first be a Chūnin. However, Naruto did not acquire the role of Chūnin or Jōnin because the Fourth Great Ninja War broke out. Despite this, he demonstrated the potential to become a high-level Jōnin.

Naruto’s Role in the Fourth Great Ninja War

In the Naruto Shippuden series, Naruto played a pivotal role in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Despite his significant contributions, he did not receive the rank of Jōnin. However, after the war, we see him studying under Iruka Sensei.

Kakashi, who was the Hokage at the time, told Naruto to study. Iruka warned Naruto that he would have to pass the theory test to become a Jōnin. Although we didn’t see him pass the exams, it’s implied that he did.

    Point to Remember

The Fourth Great Ninja War ended primarily due to the efforts of two Genins – Naruto and Sasuke. Sasuke, having gone rogue, didn’t acquire the Chūnin or Jōnin rank either, despite his exceptional abilities.

Naruto was at the very least Chunin level by the end of the series part one, but he didn’t become a Chunin.

It was shown in the Naruto Movie “Road to Ninja”, that to become Jonin, one should become a Chunin. Note that instant double promotion is also possible. The fourth, fifth, and sixth Hokage were all Jonin before they took up this role.

He did not acquire the role of Chunin or Jonin because World War broke out. Otherwise, he had the potential to become a high-level Jonin.

    Naruto Sage Mode

He single-handedly fought half of the Great World War by himself surpassing the Rank of Great Jonins directly.

Naruto played the most important role in World War.

    Why is that?

Iruka warns Naruto that Naruto will have to pass the Theory Test to become a Jonin. That’s exactly what he does, although we didn’t get to see him pass the exams.

    Point to Remember,
The Great Shinobi World War ended only because of Two Genins. You must be wondering what I am saying, but the Fact is, it’s true.

Naruto and Sasuke were both Genins when the World War came up and both of them put an end To The Great War.

Since Sasuke went rogue, he didn’t acquire Chunin or Jonin Rank. But We all know he had an amazingly exceptional ability to do so (he would have done it ages ago).

    Conclusion

In Boruto – Naruto Next Generations, Naruto did not get the rank of Chunin and Jonin. He is still a Genin. He said it in the Boruto Series. I wouldn’t Spoil Boruto’s Series Events to You so you’d get a chance to Enjoy it Yourself.
